Helensvale Baptist Church

Our possessions are not our own; they are God’s. This fundamental commitment changes everything about our thoughts and responses to our stuff. From this foundation we can then not just look at giving and tithing, but how we use all our money and possessions.

It also helps us set our minds and actions away from coveting and on to contentment, from a human centred and faithless desire for more to a trust in God not just as our provider but also the one from whom the priorities and principles of how we deal with our stuff today.

As Christians we are not immune to the struggle with our finances and money needs. From day to day expenses, mortgage and loan repayments, through to those once off bills and needs that arise from time to time. Our struggle to meet these challenges can then mean our hearts desire to provide further funds for ministry and mission can be left empty and unmet - we have nothing left to give!

15% of everything Jesus taught about was related to money - more than his teachings on heaven and hell combined! Why did he do that? Because there is a fundamental connection between God and our stuff. We may try and divorce our faith and our finances, but the Lord sees them as inseparable.
